Insulating Lilla’s gas tank

I noticed when running my Roundhouse “Lilla” that she blew off very easily even when I turned the gas down.

I suspected that the gas tank was getting very hot. It sits in the right hand side of the cab and close to the boiler.

I had noticed when stripping RH small England locos that they use 2mm thick cork sheeting as insulation around boilers.

This is readily available on EBay.

Moving the smoke box in order to remove the tank and cab in one piece.

Remove the buffer and the dummy buffer beam

The smoke box can then be slid forward [ in one piece] exposing a “tag” which fits underneath the tank

There are two cheese head screws in the cab area in order to remove the saddle tank and cab

removing the gas tank

Detach the gas pipe and the servo arm

Remove the 2 cheesehead screws under the footplate which will release the switch/servo.

The two screws holding the gas tank can now be removed, releasing the gas tank.

Gluing cork to the gas tank

I used black high temperature silicon to glue a cork square to the footplate insulating the tank from the footplate.

I then cut two pieces of cork sheet for the front and side of the gas tank nearest to the boiler, taking care that it did not overlap the windows.

Reassemble in reverse order

The end result is a slightly longer run with less blowing off.
