Mount Dowd

Yorkshire Group of 16mm N.G> Modellers

The Yorkshire Group’s Mount Dowd layout has been a fixture of many Yorkshire shows and steam ups for many years now. Although it’s had upgrades and improvements over the years, it was a layout built to last and that it’s done very well.

Many people of smaller scales would look at the layout and say “When are you going to finish it?”, as it’s a bare layout with no scenery whatsoever. No even a blade of grass can be found on this layout. That’s because this layout is designed to showcase the locos and rolling stock of Yorkshire Group members. This sole focus on what is being run, rather than what they are being run on or through, allows the layout to provide a running roster of up to 54 locos across a show day!

The layout has three main running lines, with an inner access line for locos preparing to head out. Sidings in the inside and outside allow for locos to be steaming up, or cooling down in public view. Allowing owners to chat about the loco or rolling stock with the general public.

With two locomotives able to run on each track, you get to see the marvellous spectacle of six live steam locos running at the same time. The outer track being counter clockwise gives you the added feature of locos passing by each other too.

Layout Size

Mount Dowd can be set up for a few different sizes, allowing it to adapt to the space required for the layout.

It also features a lifting door along one edge allowing it to be easily accessed by members.

With viewing from all sides, it’s the ideal layout to be positioned in a central area to maximize the viewing potential for the public.

2025 Maintenance of the points included soldering brass plates to the end of the points to ensure smooth running between adjacent boards.

The “plates” are adjustable from side to side and  guarantee that the gauge is correct.
