This model is built to a scale of 16mm to the foot (around 1/19th scale). It depicts part of one of the 60cm gauge (approx. 2ft) tactical railways constructed to supply the allied troops in the forward areas, during the latter part of the Great War of 1914-18. The railways carried munitions for the guns, materials for supporting the trenches, barbed wire and rations for men and horses.
These railways were quick to build, with minimal preparation of the ground. They were intended to have a short and brutal lifespan, often within range of the enemy guns. They were being quick to repair after enemy shellfire and quick to dismantle if and when the frontline trenches moved forward.
